Next we made a Husky Dog, Husky Dog, What Do You See?

The original theme of this book was written by Lynn Witte and was adapted by me (C.S. Calkins). Since  I could not find her book anywhere on the web, I had the idea to adapt the theme using the senses and emotions from a sled dogs point of view. My babes did the book some years ago and it is such a fun informative theme for Pre-K all the way to grade 6 that I wanted to expand on it.

I am offering our mini book as a FREEBIE in our Teacher’s Notebook Store. Our  AKGVH Husky Dog, Husky Dog….What Do You See? book bundle contains 4 different books.

The first book is large for teachers to read aloud to the class. It may also be used for picture drawing reference.

The second book is a mini book for younger children. Cut each page in half and assemble the book by stapling the left sides together. This will give you 2 mini books per printed page.

The third book contains large open drawing spaces for lower elementary children to draw their own pictures using the pictures in the teacher’s book as guides.

The last book is a mini book older elementary children to draw, again using the pictures in the teacher’s book as guides. Cut each page in half and staple the left sides together. This will give you 2 mini books per printed page.

You will most DEF want to have this sensational FREEBIE as a supplement to your Iditarod unit:

AKGVH Husky Dog, Husky Dog…What Do You See Book Bundle

After this we did a pocket chart version. First we went over the text in pocket chart form.

I took the pictures away and put the pictures on the table. Then my babes rolled the dice to see who went first.

As I read the sentence, the child whose turn it was put the correct picture next to the sentence to complete the sentence.

We also discussed the different Iditarod photos. We talked about what they may be feeling, where they were & what they may be doing.

You can do this activity with your babes using our AKGVH Husky Dog, Husky Dog Pocket Chart Set printable FREEBIE from our Teacher’s Notebook Store:

And leave us NOT forget our trusty flannelboard!! We did 1:1 correspondence:

patterning:

addition:

and subtraction:

If you would like to do some sled dog Arithmetic with your young babes, DIG our Iditarod Flannelboard Set FREEBIE from our Teacher’s Notebook Store:

Inspired by The freckled Homeschooler Northern Lights Lesson, we talked about the Northern Lights while racing in the Iditerod at night. And using the link Chrystal provided, Explaining Aurora Borealis to Young Babes, we answered the following questions:
What  colors do you think you would see & why?
Why are there so many different colors?
How does the magnetic field work?
How does the wind move particles?
We answered these questions by doing science experiments. First I let my babes play with some different type of magnets to give them an idea of how the magnetic field works:

Next, we talked about how wind moves particles and did the trusty “wind moving balloon rockets: science experiment:

We also did an old but trusted vinegar and baking soda science experiment to somewhat  mimic the swirling of the lights. We pretended the baking soda were the particles and the colored vinegar water was the wind First my babes added food coloring to the vinegar in the small bathroom size plastic cups:

Then we set up the cups and one paper plate for each babe outside. I poured some baking soda on each plate.

And of course everybody had to take a whiff:

Then my babes grabbed their pipettes, filled them with their chosen colored vinegar and let the EXPLOSIONS begin:

And I must say, their results were NOT too shabby:

Happy babes had a fun day!!! If you would like to do the above experiments and need some supplies, LET’S GO AMAZON SHOPPING!!!

We Iditarod, Do You?

Posted: March 7, 2015 in Vintage Curriculum

YEA!!! Today starts the Iditarod, The Last Great Race! Part 1

We started following the Iditarod race when Julian was young. One gets swept up in all the excitement of the race even if you do not get to actually view it. Following day by day via the internet, getting bits and pieces of the race here and there is so much fun.

Keep in mind the flick above was NOT taken by me & I do not know who the photographer was. If anyone out there does, let me know so I can give credit where credit is due. I got it off the web. I watermarked it with my logo as it is my copy that I use in my classroom. If you need pictures for your own personal classroom use, Boston.com has some adorable flicks:

Dogs and Sleds Flicks for Classroom Use

as does the Guardian:

Check out this 279 Iditarod picture slide show flicks from Huffington post:

This one was taken by Jeff King:
While we never purchased the commercial free Premium video of the trail complete with musher interviews, the checkpoints and race analysis, we follow via the GPS tracker. You can get musher alerts, subscribe to Insider alive where you can actually ask questions via live chat, and that is SWEEEEEET!! Also live finish broadcast from Nome features the crowning of the champion and the Live Finish Cameras show all the mushers from the champion to the Red Lantern 24/7!
In the days of years gone by, we were able to glean enough to follow along as best we could with the free subscription which features access to videos not available to unregistered users like the race documentaries, articles and much more. Registered users also get to choose a favorite musher to track and get email alerts based on their activity. You can view all the packages  the full video here:

Get the GPS tracker here:

For younger babes, I show them the following movie to get them in the spirit as well:

So either way, you ALL can follow along the fun and excitement of the Last Great Race! So get yourself started, then come back for MORE Iditarod ideas, links & FREEBIES!

Here is our husky, Eh-nuk. And since we are in the National Forest, it snows from time to time.

Of course Eh-nuk DIGS the snow but being the spoiled boy that he is, he also likes to come inside and keep warm:

eBay has a rather large selection of plush Husky Dog stuffed animals toys to suit your pocketbook:

Husky Dog Plush Stuffed Animal

Next I always show our Balto Movie. Babes of all ages DIG Balto!

I break out our Balto stuffed animal and set him near the TV throughout the race to remind them of the historical meaning of the race. I got him a few decades ago when my babes were young and the movie had just come out. I kept him all these years for classroom Iditarod use:

He is rather pricey on both Amazon & eBay but if you are interested in having a Balto mascot in your classroom. I found one on Amazon:

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=akingar-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B008JNX9BW&asins=B008JNX9BW&linkId=WTKG3KXLWPLDBJLD&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

eBay has more of a selection but again, he is rather pricey as he is considered a collectable now:

Balto Plush Stuffed Animal

Here is a Alaskan Malamute vs  Siberian Husky detailed chart which is an out-a-sight detailed comparison:

To begin our Iditarod Interactive classroom race, first, I made this bulletin board map of the Iditarod trail. I went to a satellite map site and copied it as best as I could to give my babes a sense of the actual trail terrain, hazards, climate and the like.

First I outlined the map on a large sheet of butcher paper.  Next using a paint brush, I splotched the colors on, then dabbed at them to blend together with a wet sponge. This technique gave my map a more realistic look.

Needless to say, it took me several day to complete. Then I covered it with clear contact to preserve it for future race studies.

If you are hep to making your own somewhat realistic Iditarod trail map, LET’S  GO AMAZON SHOPPING!

Each child chose a musher to follow, either one they just happened to like (my younger babes) or through musher and team analysis and probability. You can get some freebie graphs, charts, notebooking and other various Iditarod worksheets, activities, and the like via the links below that I will be adding later.

I charted their chosen teams by putting the musher’s number on the dog and placing it in its correct location (or thereabouts) daily. Adding unchosen teams to the mix proved an exciting and sporting interactive Iditarod to classroom race!

And here is your first FREEBIE!!! A vintage Eskimo dog sled paper toy from our AKGHV Teacher’s Notebook Store:

Vintage Eskimo Dog Sled Paper Toy

Here is a close up of my bulletin board musher and dogs. I printed out a set of dogs for each child and colored the booties to match. To make the musher, first I colored the musher then glued the sled frame onto the back of the runners and let it dry. Then I glued the back of the pack onto the back of the frame and let it dry. I turned it over, then glued cover on the pack above the dotted line. Next, I folded the flap up and glued the inside contents on the pack back and let dry. Last I glued the musher’s hands onto the sled. Then I connected the musher and sled with black yarn for the harnesses, tuglines and ganglines to the huskys.

And now for another FREEBIE! You can print out our musher and dogs for your own Iditarod interactive bulletinboard with the following templates from our Teachers Notebook Store:

That Daffodil Time of Year in Our Forest

Daffodils are one of the first signs of “SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET, Spring is just around the corner!!!”,  here on the mountain in the Southern Cali Cleveland National Forest.  While we do not see as many as there was in years gone by, there are still some survivors here and there. We have our own little patch right outside the kitchen window and they sure are pretty to look at whilst washing those never ending dirty dishes. And what a respite that is! I oft think to myself through the decades , “Gee, it seems like I spend my life washing dishes. Seems like I have washed enough dishes to stack to the moon!” That there small patch of Daffodils sure does take the monotony of it all away, if just for a few moments & that my friends, is NOTHING to shake a stick at, as every dish washing mother would most prob agree. Can you dig it?

Bummer tho’ as it seems that as soon as they pop up, they once again vanish before one can blink an eye.  So as you can imagine being a homeschooler of my grand wee ones, I wanted to capture the moment for them in art and I must say they came out real psychedelic.

So much so, Gramma snagged ’em to deco her pad!

Before we started on our daffodil crafts, I showed them this time lapse video of a daffodil opening:

Beginning with the flowers in the vase, here is how we made them. First, I cut the egg cups out from an egg carton flat:

and carefully smashed them down like so:
Next, I glued gunned them together to form the outside of the flower:

Next I had my babes paint them yellow and we let them dry. For the leaves, I cut one in half and had them paint these green:

The stems are a paper towel tube cut in half:

Then I rolled it and glued the ends together. For the cup of the flower, I kept the original egg cup in tact. After the paint dried, I glue gunned the egg cup on top of the smashed flower, bent and glued some golden pipe cleaner pieces for the filaments. Next we outlined each flower and leaves in school glue & covered the glue with gold & green glitter. So, cannot blame gramma for trippin’ heavy!

I got the suncatcher daffodil idea from here:

I changed the design a bit to brighten them up as we DIG making things our own. First, I drew a pattern as I wanted to make ours bigger. You can get it FREE from our AKGVH Teacher’s Notebook Store here:
First, I had my babes crush some yellow crayons and we added bits of orange and brown here and there to add more color. I had previously pre-cut 2 flower outlines out of yellow construction paper for each babe. Then placing a cut piece of wax paper on my ironing board adjusted to child height, I placed one of the flower outlines underneath the wax paper to use as a guide. Next had my babes add some of the crushed crayon in the middle of the flower with a plastic spoon:

Then I placed another sheet of wax paper on top & they ironed the wax until it melted somewhat:

Using a yellow permanent marker, I traced the outside line of the flower and wrote their initial near it so I knew whose was whose. See how brilliant the colors turned out:

Next, my babes glued the bottom flower outline:

My babes then glued on top of the wax paper and placed the 2nd outline on top of that:

On separate wax paper sheets, we melted green crayon bits.

I cut out leaf shapes from their green wax paper and glue gunned a length of green pipe cleaner around the edges:

For the inside part of the flower I used the yellow painted nut cups left over from our Christmas Advent Tree Calendar. If you would like to view our Advent Tree click on the quick link here:

AKGVH Christmas Tree Advent Calendars

And while everyone around here caps on me for saving & stashing, they had to admit those left over used cups came in real handy for these, and look pretty far-out! HA! Once again, I glue gunned gold pipe cleaner lengths for the filaments and glue gunned it onto the suncatcher:

We outlined the suncatcher in gold glitter and added some on the yellow paper and let them dry.  I glue gunned on a green pipe cleaner stem, yellow hook, and the leaves, and WELLA!!!

Here is a different daffodil suncatcher template you can print out from Chantals:

Oh yellow , yellow daffodil, you tell me spring has come.
I can hear a blue bird sing, and hear a robin call,
But yellow yellow daffodil I love you most of all.

Daffodils Fingerplay

One little daffodil had nothing much to do,
Out popped another one, then there were two.
Two little daffodils were smiling at a bee,
Out popped another one, then there were three.
Three little daffodils were growing by the door,
Out popped another one, then there were four.
Four little daffodils were glad to be alive,
Out popped another one, then there were five.
Five little daffodils were wearing golden crowns,
They danced in the breeze in green satin gowns.

Welcome to part 2 of our AKGVH Queen of Hearts Valentine. If you missed part one, DIG the quick link:

When I owned and operated A Kinders Garten Preschool Program back in the ’80’s, we played The Queen of Hearts Game. As previously stated on one of my earlier blog posts, in those days, pictures of various activities were not taken on a regular basis. Special occasions, holidays, birthdays and the like, yes, but not on a daily basis as is done today.
To play the game, choose one child to be the King or Queen of Hearts and one child to be the Court Fool. Drawing lots for larger groups or throwing dice for smaller groups is a good way to choose. Highest/longest  is King/Queen, lowest/shortest is the Court Fool. The other children are the knaves.

The King/Queen must have a crown, we made this crown from the days of yesteryear:

As you can see, I changed the construction a bit using foam and colored gems. I also made it adjustable by placing velcro on the ends.

Due to the weight of the foam vs the weight of the embellishments, the crown we made does not stand up at the top like the one made from days gone by. But when placed on the child’s head, you can center the top loops on the child’s head. A girl with a top knot helps:

It also makes a DYNO deco:

I also put a strip of red velcro on the back to make it adjustable:

You can get our FREEBIE directions to make this crown from our Teacher’s Notebook Store:

To make the scepter I first covered a wax paper, syran wrap or aluminum foil empty tube with foil. These tubes are thicker than paper towel tubes. I spray painted a styrofoam ball gold for the top of the scepter. When it dried, I glue gunned it on top of the foil covered tube. Then I embellished the scepter with red and white ribbons around the bottom, gold pipe cleaners and gems of various colors. I chose colors that caught the eye when placed on the background:

We played the game outside casually but really you play the game by having the King/Queen sit on a decorated throne. Covering an adult sized chair with aluminum foil, then embellished with fake gems makes for a regal throne. You can add yellow crepe streamers around the bottom for a fringe if you dig that scene.

Somewhat similar to musical chairs, you place large foam or clear contact covered or laminated construction paper or tagboard hearts scattered on the floor, one per knave.

To begin the game, each knave must stand on a heart with the Court Fool somewhere in the middle.

The King/Queen at their leisure, holds up the scepter and says, “All change hearts!” At the command, the knaves and Court Fool must change to “steal” the hearts. Whoever is unsuccessful at “stealing” a heart becomes the Court Fool.

We also played this game using our Queen of Hearts record introduced above.

Since I do not have pictures of this game from yesteryear, today our queen was standing in the sandbox outside and at 1  1/2 years of age, our KaiaSue ruled the role in a MAJESTIC way:

Next we made some tarts using this vintage Tart Recipe:

We used Cherry Filling for the inside and added some to the icing. They sure came out YUMMY!!!

You can make our vintage Queen of Hearts Tarts with your babes using our FREEBIE recipe as shown above from our Teacher’s Notebook Store:

AKGVH A The Queen of Hearts Valentine Part 1

Valentine’s Day is coming soon and amidst our other Valentine fun,

we like to watch our FAV vintage Queen of hearts Cartoons:

Next we like to play our The Queen of Hearts record. As you can see, it has been played alot over the decades:

Currently I have been unable to find this particular record but you may want to give it a try on eBay:

The Queen of Hearts Children’s Golden Records

Then we made The Queen of Hearts interactive craft.
Materials:

An Old Deck of Cards one deck per child.

One Queen of Hearts Playing Card for each child.

One King of Hearts Playing Card for each child.

One Jack of Hearts Playing Card for each child.

3 Misc Playing Cards for each child.

4 Red Pony Beads for each child.

3 Tongue Depressor Size Craft Sticks for each child.

One  1  1/2″ Magnet Strip for each child.

One 1/2″ Magnet Strip for each child.

One Small Paper Clip for each child.

One School Glue Bottle for each child.

Four Small Aluminum Foil Circles for each child.

One Large Aluminum Foil Circle for each child.

Glue Gun

Glue Sticks

Clothes Pins

Directions:

Using one small foil circle, wrap a bead on the bottom and sides to look like a tart. Repeat with the other 3 beads.

Shape and fold edges of the large circle into tray large enough to hold  the 4 tarts. Using the glue gun, glue the tarts onto the tray.

Next, glue the paper clip to the bottom side of the tray. Be sure it sticks out on one side.

Now have the children take one of their miscellaneous cards and glue all over the face with the school glue. Have them take one craft stick and place it onto the glued card adding extra glue making sure one end of the stick sticks out enough to get a firm hold on it. Add more glue to the top of the stick, then place one of the heart cards on top.

Secure the cards together with the clothespins. Be sure to pin close to the sticks and all around to ensure a good seal.

Let dry. Repeat with the next cards. When complete, you should now have the king, queen & jack of cards puppets.

Next using the glue gun, glue the 1  1/2″ magnet strip  onto the middle of the jack card:

Then glue the 1/2″ strip onto the middle of the queen card.

Now you are ready to act out The Queen of Tarts Nursery Rhyme:

The Queen of Hearts,

She made some tarts,

All on a summer’s day.

The knave of hearts,

He stole those tarts,

And took them all away.

The king of hearts,

He called for the tarts,

And beat the knave full sore.

The knave of hearts,

Brought back the tarts,

And vowed he’d steal no more.

To use the puppets, place the tarts on the queen’s magnet. Have the jack take the tarts:

This flick came out a bit fuzzy as it was a bit difficult getting my babes to take the hearts slowly:

Now bring in the king to make the knave give the tarts back to the queen:

Welcome to Part 2 of our Vintage Weather Cats with Hats Activity Blog Post! If you missed Part 1 of this here post, DIG the quick link:

After reading and singing, we made a tagboard 3D Weather Book Craft entitled,

Rainbow, Rainbow, What Do You See?

Materials:

White Tagboard

Tempera Paints

Paint Brushes

Glue Bucket

@ 2″ Paintbrush

Blue, Shimmer and Gold Glitter

Cotton Balls

Gold Pipe Cleaners

Blue and White Construction Paper

Glue Gun

Glue Sticks

Foam Snowflakes

Printed Sentences

Directions:
Beginning with the first page, I had my babes paint a rainbow:

When our rainbows were dry, we glued painted our sentence and put it on our rainbow page:

Next I had them paint a sunny day with flowers, trees, etc:

Then we painted our suns:

While they were still wet, using recycled shakers I had pre-filled with gold glitter from my gold one lb. container, I had my babes shake the glitter on their suns to make them appear “fiery”:

Next we worked on our raindrop, snowflake and cloud pages. First I had my babes fingerpaint five pages of stormy backgrounds using the tempera paints:

Using pre-cut raindrops I laid them out on newspaper:

Then using a 2″ paint brush, I held a raindrop with my finger while my babe painted the glue on them:
We moved the raindrops onto a used  disposable tinfoil serving tray that I keep for projects just like this one…comes in handy! Using the recycled shakers I had pre-filled with blue glitter from my blue one lb. container, I had my babes shake away:

We did the same steps with foam snowflakes only using shimmer glitter:

When the glitter dried, we glued the raindrops, snowflakes and sentences on their stormy pages:

Then we glued the cotton and sentences on the another stormy page we had painted:

On our last stormy page, I bent the pipe cleaners into a lightning bolt shape & glued them on the page for my babes. Then I had them they glue on their sentences:

For the hail page, we used one of our stormy pages and had my babes glue white packing popcorns on it, then their sentence:

This project took several days and when all the pages had been assembled and dried, I stapled them together to make a book which read:
Rainbow, Rainbow…
What do you see? (placed on the rainbow page)
I see raindrops falling on me. (placed on the back of the rainbow page)
Raindrops, raindrops…
What do you see? (placed on the raindrop page)
I see clouds all around me. (placed on the back of the raindrop page)
Clouds, clouds…
What do you see? (placed on the cloud page)
I see lightening zapping me. (placed on the back of the cloud page)
Lightening, lightening…
What do you see? (placed on the lightening page)
I see hail falling with me. (placed on the back of the lightning page)
Hail, hail…
What do you see? (placed on the hail page)
I see snowflakes falling, see with me! (placed on the back of the cloud page)
Snowflakes, snowflakes…
What do you see? (placed on the snowflake page)
I see flowers l@@ king at me. (placed on the back of the snowflake page)
Flowers, flowers…
What do you see? (placed on the flower page)
I see the sun shining down on me. (placed on the sun page)
The End. (placed on the sun page)

Tempera Paints

Then we made Weather Hats:

Materials:

Paper Plate
Cotton
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue & Purple Pipe Cleaners
Blue Hued, Silver and White Ribbon Lengths
Yellow Tempera Paint
Glue Bottle
Glue Gun
Glue Sticks
Gold Glitter
Cloud Pattern

Directions:

Paint the paper plate yellow, let dry. Cut points out of the center.  Using the glue bottle, trace all the points, then sprinkle with the gold glitter, let dry. Fold the tab over on the cloud cut outs, glue cotton onto the cloud pieces, let dry. Glue the clouds two on each side, let dry. Bend one of each pipe cleaner color to form a rainbow and cut the ends to fit between two clouds on one side and glue gun them onto the back of the clouds.  Repeat on the other side. Next, glue the ribbon lengths all around the outside rim of the paper plate, let dry.  Last, glue more cotton on the top of the hat to cover any exposed areas, let dry. Now your hat is done!

Weather Cats with Hats Activities & FREEBIES Part 1!

January is a good time to cover weather and seasons. I like to begin this lesson with the following vintage cartoons:

Walt Disney’s The Old Mill begins with a brilliant sunny day, then quickly turns to stormy weather. Will the Old Mill and all the critters that live there survive the storm? Watch and see:

Watch these birds in Hawaii react to weather changes in this 1936 vintage Max Fleischer Cartoon:

Happy Harmonies 1936 To Spring Cartoon is a days gone by look at the closing of winter and the beginning of Spring. Spring has finally come but Old Man Winter is not so willing to leave without one last bluster:

Weather Report Animation is a series of weather shorts possibly shown daily on a local station in days gone by:

Here is The Great Cat Family for older children from The Wonderful World of Disney Part 1:

Part 2:

Leave us to intro our FAV Cat who wears a hat:

Be sure to get our EXCLUSIVE vintage Top Cat coloring page FREEBIE:

 Vintage Top Cat Coloring Page

And we most certainly cannot omit the most famous Cat in the Hat:

Then we watch a few of our weather & seasons film strips.

I introduced this section of our unit with this set from Eyegate. I showed them The Ingredients of Weather film:
Next we watched The Sun and Weather along with Rain and Snow from SVE. This set also has a Teaching Guide to accompany:

A Walk in the Rain from Family Filmstrips is a good one as well. The film strips in this set are accompanied with records and Teaching Guides:

Then we l@@ked through some books. The first book Wild Weather, a beginning reader,  displays large vibrant pictures along with bold font. I chose this book first to wrap up the film strip presentations and as an opening to our literature  section:

We added the 1996 printing to our curriculum collection:

We began with taking a look at the different weather days. These detailed true to life pictures are absolutely exquisite arousing elaborate discussions.
Then following the Teacher’s Guide accompanying this book, I described a type of day and had my babes point to the correct day:

If you DIG this book as much as we do, you can get the text book along with the Teachers Edition to go with it on Amazon:

or search through a larger selection on eBay:

Look and Learn Scott Foresman

Next we watched Observing Changes in Weather from National Geographic using the accompanying Teaching Guide:

I followed the film strip with Weather All Around Us another Scott Foreman book. These pictures covered how weather changes:

You will want this for your older children. You can get it FREE from our AKGVH Teacher’s Notebook store:

1938 Weather Book

After sitting for a bit, to shake it out we played our vintage Exercising with the Weather Record and had a BLAST:

Now that we learned how weather changes, and did a bit of exercising to help us focus on our next activity, I introduced my Cats in Hats pocket chart rhyme:

After reciting the rhyme several times and matching the correct picture to the words, I broke out my standing flannelboard and we built the rhyme using numerals and pictures. We played it several ways:

Next we did cat patterning:

and hat patterning:

And when we finished with our pocket chart and flannelboard activities, I placed the pieces in their labeled folders for storing:

Now that we learned about weather changes, we sang some weather, cat and hat songs:

Five Little Weathermen

Five little weathermen standing near the gate.
The first one said, “My it’s getting late”.
The second one said, “There are storm clouds in the sky”.
The third one said, “Let’s run inside”.
The fourth one said, “Wait, the sun is peeking out”.
The fifth one said, “That’s what weather’s all about”.
ooooo….went the wind, and up flew their kite,
and the 5 little weathermen chased it out of sight.

Fluffy Cloud

What is fluffy white and floats up high, (point up at the sky)

Like a pile of cotton in the sky?
And when the wind blows hard and strong, (wiggle hands side to side) What very gently floats along? (wiggle fingers and hands gently back and forth)

What brings the rain? (Open palms up)

What brings the snow that showers on us way down below? (look down) When you look up in the sky, (look up)

What is that thing you see floating by? (a Cloud)

Grey Pussycat

A big Grey pussycat (Pull on whiskers), pussycat, pussycat,
A big Grey pussycat lives in a house. (Make house with both hands)
A big Grey pussycat, pussycat, pussycat,
A big Grey pussycat POUNCED on a MOUSE!! (clap hands together).

Hat Happy

I wear my hat upon my head,
I wear my hat upon my hair.
I wear it here I wear it there,
My hat and I go everywhere.

I wear it in the rain and snow,
I wear it even when it’s hot.
My hair feels lonely when its off,
My head feels happy when its not.

And when it’s time to get to bed,
And Mama says, “Take off your hat!”
I do exactly as I’m told,
And put it on my kitty cat!

I Am a Little Cat

Sing to: I’m a Little Teapot

I am a little kitty-cat,
Soft and furry.
I will be your friend,
So do not worry.
Right up on your lap I like to hop,
I will purr, purr, purr and never stop.

I Know A Cat

Sing to: Bingo

I know a cat with perky ears,
And kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,
And Kitty is her name-o.

When she makes a sound it’s “meow,”
And Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,
And Kitty is her name-o.

Look Out the Window

Sing to: Frere Jacques

What’s the weather, what’s the weather,
On this (Monday), On this (Monday)?
Let’s look out the window,
Let’s look out the window?
It is (Sunny), It is (Sunny).
Replace ( ) with the correct word.

Look Outside

Sing to: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Is there sunshine, is there rain,
Is wind blowing down the lane?
Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Are there snowflakes falling down,
Are there big clouds floating around?
Look outside now, Can you say
What the weather is today?

Oh My, What Will the Weather Be?

Sing to:  Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?

Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
It will be (rainy, cloudy, sunny, snowy, windy.. ) today.

Our Hats

These are our hats.
What are they for?
They keep our heads warm when we go out the door.

That Spells Hats

Sing to: Frere Jacques

H-A-T-S
H-A-T-S
That spells hats,
That spells hats.
Everybody wears them,
Everybody wears them.
When they’re cold,
When they’re cold.

Other Verses:
To protect their heads.
To shade their eyes.
To keep them warm.
When they dress up.

The Weather is a Funny Thing

adapted by: C.S. Calkins

Sing to: Mary Had a Little Lamb

The weather is a funny thing,
Funny thing, funny thing,
The weather is a funny thing
It changes everyday.

Monday is a ________ day,
______ day, ________day
Monday is a ________ day,

That’s the weather for today!

(Sunny Day)

The sun is out and shining bright,

Shining bright, shining bright.

The sun is out and shining bright,

On this lovely day!

(Rainy Day)

The rain is cold and very wet,

Very wet, very wet.

The rain is cold and very wet,

It’s such a rainy day!

(Cloudy Day)

The fluffy clouds are out today,

Out today, out today.

The fluffy clouds are out today,

They are very white (gray)!

(Snowy Day)

The snow comes down all fluffy white,

Fluffy white, fluffy white.

The snow comes down all fluffy white,

It’s such a snowy day!

(Windy Day)

The wind is cold (warm) and blustery,

Blustery, blustery.

The wind is cold (warm) and blustery,

On this windy day!

(Stormy Day)

Today is such a stormy day,

Stormy day, stormy day.

Today is such a stormy day,

I’m glad I am inside!

There Was a Day

Sing to: B-I-N-G-O

There was a day, when it was hot (warm),

And sunny was the weather.
S-U-N-N-Y,
S-U-N-N-Y,
S-U-N-N-Y,
And Sunny was the weather!

Other Verses:

There was a day when it was wet,

And rainy was the weather.

There was a day when it was cold,

And snowy was the weather.

There was a day when I got blown,

And windy was the weather.

This little Wind Blows Rain

Tap on fingers like This Little Piggy

This little wind blows rain,

This little wind drifts snow.

This little wind brings the sunshine,

This little wind whistles low.

And this little wind,

Rocks the baby birds to and fro.

W is for Weather

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not.
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot.
We’ll weather the weather,
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

What Kind Of Weather

Sing to: Bingo

I went outside the door today,
And sunny was the weather.
SUNNY, SUNNY, SUNNY
And sunny was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And windy was the weather.
WINDY, WINDY, WINDY
And windy was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And rainy was the weather.
RAINY, RAINY, RAINY
And rainy was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And snowy was the weather.
SNOWY, SNOWY, SNOWY
And SNOWY was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And stormy was the weather.
STORMY, STORMY, STORMY
And stormy was the weather!

What Will the Weather Be?

What Will the Weather Be?

Whatever the Weather
by Marilyn M. Linford

Whatever the Weather

What’s the Weather

Sing to: Frere Jacques

What’s the weather, what’s the weather?
Can you tell, Can you tell?
Is the sun shining, is the rain falling?
Can you tell, Can you tell?

Another Version:

Sing to: Clementine

What’s the weather,
What’s the weather,
What’s the weather like today?
Tell us (child’s name) what’s the weather,
What’s the weather like today.
Is it sunny, (make big circle with arms above head)
Is it cloudy, (cover eyes with hands)
Is it rainy out today? (rain fingers)
Is it snowy, (shiver)
Is it windy, (windy arms)
What’s the weather like today?

Weather Helper

Sing to: Clementine

Weather Helper, Weather Helper
What’s the weather outside?
Go and look out through the window,
Tell us what you see outside.

What’s the weather?
What’s the weather?
What’s the weather tell us now!
Is it windy? Is it cloudy? Is there rain? or is there sun?

Who’s Afraid of Weather?

Sing to: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Who’s afraid of a rainy day, a rainy day, a rainy day?
Who’s afraid of a rainy day? Ha, ha, not me!

I wear my coat on a rainy day, a rainy day, a rainy day.
I wear my coat on a rainy day.
My coat keeps me dry.

Repeat using the following substitutions:

Snowy
Windy (coat – keeps me warm)
Sunny (hat – keeps me cool)

Weather Sayings

The moon and the weather may change together,
But a change of the moon, will not change the weather.

A ring around the sun or moon, means rain or snow coming soon.
When grass is dry at morning light
Look for rain before the night.

Dew on the grass, rain won’t come to pass.
When the night goes to bed with a fever, it will awake with a wet head.
When stars shine clear and bright,
We will have a very cold night.

Three days rain will empty any sky.
The sharper the blast, the sooner ’tis past.
If bees stay at home, rain will soon come,
If they flay away, fine will be the day.

When clouds look like black smoke a wise man will put on his cloak.
When the chairs squeak, it’s of rain they speak.
Catchy drawer and sticky door,
Coming rain will pour and pour.

When the sun shines while raining,
it will rain the same time again tomorrow.

When the wind blows from the west, fish bite best.
When it blows from the east, fish bite least.

When the wind is in the east, ’tis neither good for man nor beast.

Mittens for Three Little Kittens & FREEBIES! – Part 2

You will be STOKED you came back for another Mittens for Three Little Kittens visit as we will trip this garden FANTASTIC!

I made this interactive kitty mitten color matching game from Danielle’s Place Cat Crafts. My babes had a BODACIOUS time playing several games with this here interactive kitten over & over.

I altered it a bit from the directions using felt for the paws, ears, tongue and mittens. For the whiskers I used pipe cleaners. I also outlined the tongue, paws and mittens with glitter glue. I made the paws movable using brads. Here are some close up assembly pictures:

I also read the following poems and used this kitty to tell the story. The children had to find the color mittens I just read off and put them on the kitty.

My Poor Little Kitten

My poor little kitten lost her mitten
And started to cry, boo-hoo.
So I helped my kitten to look for her mitten.
Her beautiful mitten of BLUE.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my Mother’s bed.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored RED.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the kitchen sink.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored PINK

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
in my Mothers’ storage.

But alas, the mitten was not the right mitten

For it was colored orange.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my father’s pillow.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored YELLOW.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the laundry so clean.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored GREEN.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my toy gurple.

But alas, it was not the right mitten

As it was the color purple.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
On the hand of my brother’s toy clown.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored BROWN.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Inside a grocery sack.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored BLACK.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Underneath the hay.

But alas, the mitten was not the right mitten

As it was colored gray.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Underneath my kite.

But alas, the mitten was not the correct mitten

As it was colored white.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Inside my favorite shoe.
And this time the mitten was just the right mitten,
For it was colored BLUE!

In Winter I Put My Mittens On

Sing to: Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush

In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Monday they are red.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Tuesday they are green.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Wednesday they are blue.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Thursday they are pink.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Friday they are yellow.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Saturday they are grey.
In winter I put my mittens on,
my mittens on, my mittens on.
In winter I put my mittens on.
On Sunday they are white.

Each Mitten has a Mate

Sing to: If You’re Happy And You Know It

Each and every  mitten has a mate, has a mate.
Oh, each mitten and every has a mate, has a mate.
Can (child’s name) find the pair?
(He/She) is looking here and there.
Can (child’s name) find the mate.
Find the mate?

Colorful Mittens

Sing to: Six Little Ducks

Colorful mittens for me and you
Red ones, yellow ones, blue ones too.
But the one pair of mittens that rhymes with fellow,
They’re my favorite mittens, they’re the color yellow!

Replace with other rhyming pairs such as:
red/bed
bean/green
sink/pink

Brown/crown

Tack/black

Gurple/purple

Borin/orange

Zoo/blue

Kite/white

Pray/gray

Ten Colored Mittens

Ten colored mittens hanging on the line
one fell off, then there were nine.
Nine colored mittens near the garden gate,
one fell off, then there were eight.
Eight colored mittens waving to the heaven
one fell off, then there were seven.
Seven colored mittens hanging near the sticks
one fell off, then there were six.
Six colored mittens were near a beehive
one fell off, then there were five.
Five colored mittens hanging at the door
one fell off, then there were four.
Four colored mitten hanging on a tree
one fell off, then there were three.
Three colored mittens, up in the sky blue
one fell off, then there were two.
Two colored mittens flapping in the sun…
one fell off, then there was one.
One colored mitten alone had no fun,
So he flew a way, and then there were none.

Then I hid the colored mittens around the room for a fun Hide N Seek game.

We recited some Kitten fingerplays and songs:

Five Kittens

Five little kittens standing in a row, (Hold up five fingers.)
They nod their heads to the children so. (Bend fingers)
They run to the left; they run to the right. (Run fingers to the left and then to the right.)
They stand up and stretch in the bright sunlight. (Stretch fingers out tall.)
Along comes a dog who’s in for some fun. (Hold up one finger from opposite hand.)
ME-OW! See those little kittens run! (Let fingers run.)

Five Little Pussycats Playing Near the Door

Five little pussycats playing near the door; (hold up 5

fingers)

One ran and hid inside and then there were four.

Four little pussycats underneath a tree; (hold up 4 fingers)

One heard a dog bark and then there were three.

Three little pussycats thinking what to do; (hold up 3 fingers)

One saw a little bird and then there were two.

Two little pussycats sitting in the sun; (hold up 2 fingers)

One ran to catch his tail and then there was one.

One little pussycat looking for some fun; (hold up one

finger)

He saw a butterfly—and then there was none.

5 Warm Mittens

By Boy Teacher Mama

Five warm mittens hanging on the line,

First one said, “We sure look fine.”

Second one said, “It sure is cold.”

Third one said, “I am getting old.”

Fourth one said, “I hear someone near.”

Fifth one said, “Soon we will be warm- there’s nothing to fear!”

Then “pluck” went the mittens and in through the door

and 5 little mittens were hanging no more.

Kitten is Hiding

A Kitten is Hiding under a chair, (hide thumb under other hand)

I looked and looked for her everywhere! (peer around looking)

Under the table and under the bed, (pretend to look)

I looked around the corner, and when I said,

“Come here kitty kitty, there’s milk for you!” (cup hands for a dish and extend)

Kitty came running and calling, “Meow, meow, meow.” (run fingers up arm)

Kitty Cat

I have a kitty cat named Puff. (hold up one thumb)

He’s round and soft as a ball of fluff. (make a circle with both hands)

Each day he laps up all his milk.

And his fur is soft as silk. (stroke thumb with other hand)

When he’s happy you will know,

For his fluffy tail swings to and fro. (swing little finger back and forth)

Mitten Finger play
by Lucia Kemp Henry

Here is a mitten,                    (hold up one hand)
A snug, fuzzy one-                 (rub palms together)
With a place for my fingers     (wiggle 4 fingers)
And a place for my thumb        (wiggle thumb)

Here are two mittens,              (hold up two hands)
A colorful sight.                       (hands back and forth)
One for the left hand                (hold up left hand)
One for the right.                     (hold up right hand)

Here are our mittens,              (hold up two hands)
As soft as can be                      (stroke the back of one hand)
A warm pair for you                   (point to the neighbor)
And a warm pair for me             (point to yourself)

Mitten Music
by Jean Rogers

Sing to: Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone

Oh where, oh where did my NEW mittens go?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
Oh, I have looked high and I have looked low.
Oh where, oh where can they be?

You can sing more verses replacing the word “NEW”  with old, soft, warm, red, blue, etc.

My Kitty

I have a little kitty (pinky & index fingers pointing up like ears)

He is as quick as can be (make quick side ways motion with hand)

He jumps upon my lap

And purrs a song to me. (cup one hand in the palm of the other)

Two Little Kittens

Two little kittens found a ball of yarn while they were playing near the barn. (pinky & index fingers pointing up like ears using both hands)

1 little kitten jumped in the hay, (fingers spread & jumping motion)

But the other kitten ran away. (fingers running away)

When Julian was younger, I hung a clothesline in our classroom and he did some mitten addition color matching:

We did some mitten color word stamping from Making Learning Fun Mitten Read & Stamp using my vintage Monster Alphabet Stampers:

We made The Mystery of the Lost Mitten read, trace and color books from Teach With Me. I tried to find the exact link but I was unable to.

I had the children trace the words as I had written them on the chalkboard using each step to form the letters correctly:

We talked about pairs and did some worksheets covering pairs from my Vintage Three Little Kittens Activity Pack:

And some other worksheets covering pairs from:

DIG our FAR OUT mitten crafts! First we made some mitten suncatchers. I put a sheet of wax paper on my ironing board.
We peeled and smashed some crayons and sprinkled them on the wax paper. Then I put another piece of wax paper on top. Each babe ironed their crayon crumbles until they melted into the color they wanted.

We glued one side of a cut out mitten on top of the melted wax and let it dry.

Turning the wax paper over, we glued on the other side of the mitten and let it dry. Next we glued on a piece of yarn for a hanger:

then glued cotton balls on top and around it.  Let it dry turned it over and glued cotton on the opposite side. Letting that dry, I outlined the mitten with glue and had each babe sprinkle glitter over the glue lines and let it dry, then hung them on Gramma’s window:

Next we made  Mitten Wreaths out of paper plates and foam:

Of course my babes had other plans for those wreaths:

Lay your old newspaper over your work area. Pour the glue into  a medium plastic bowl. Add some water and stir, I use a whisk to quicken the process. Next cut the poster backing for your 2013 using your paper cutter. We cut ours 17 1/4″ X 9″. Then lay your old newspaper over your work area get your glue bucket and @ 2″ brush. Set your poster backing on another flat surface and lay the 2013 leaving margins on both sides keeping the numbers @ 1/2″ apart. Take the number 2 and turn it over, then lay it on top of your newspaper. Have your babe dip the brush into the glue and paint the glue onto the back of the number 2, turn it over  and place it in its space on the poster backing. Repeat for the 0, 1 & 3.  Let dry.

Using your glue bottle, trace one of the numbers on your poster, then get a piece of your half page sales flyer and lay it out. Put your poster on top of the flyer. Open the pour spout of the glitter. Have your babe hold the glitter jar and together, pour the glitter over the glue. Your babe may want to shake, but do NOT let them or glitter will fly!!! Instruct them, “Pour, not shake.” Set the glitter down, pick up the poster and pour the excess glitter on top of the flyer. Next have your babe hold the glitter bottle while you pour the glitter on the flyer back into the jar. Repeat the process. Let dry. Now hang your poster either as a calendar topper:

Next get your glue bucket, your 2″ brush and the Times Square New Years Eve Countdown Ball. Get some clean newspaper and lay it out but keep it folded. Lay the ball right side up on the newspaper and have your babe put glue on it using the 2” brush and glue bucket.

Move the ball to a piece of your half page sales flyer that has been laid out. Have your babe open the pour spout of the confetti glitter. Confetti glitter is an important media for this craft as it will make your ball look more like the Times Square ball.

Need some:

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=akingar-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00AUB57HK&asins=B00AUB57HK&linkId=HYKCPD3RX5DS7BMO&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

Glitter Confetti - 8 oz. Glitter Confetti – 8 oz.
Includes shining diamonds dots hexagons red hearts sequins and stars in a resealable bag. 8 ounces. Does not contain latex.

Have your babe hold the glitter jar and together, pour the glitter over the glue. Remember, your babe may want to shake, but do NOT let them or glitter will fly!!! Remind them, “Pour, not shake.” Set the glitter down, pick up the ball and pour the excess glitter on top of the flyer. Next have your babe hold the glitter bottle while you pour the glitter on the flyer back into the jar. Let dry.

Move the sign to a piece of sales flyer that has been laid out. Using your glue bottle, outline the sign. Then have your babe open the pour spout of the glitter. Have your babe hold the glitter jar and together, pour the glitter over the glue. Remember, your babe may want to shake, but do NOT let them or glitter will fly!!! Remind them, “Pour, not shake.” Set the glitter down, pick up the sign and pour the excess glitter on top of the flyer. Next have your babe hold the glitter bottle while you pour the glitter on the flyer back into the jar. Let dry.

Go back to your newspaper and lay out the letters backwards, With your glue bucket and 2” brush, have your babe glue letters then place them onto the sign spelling out “Happy New Year!” and let dry. When placing more letters on the newspaper, be sure to place them on a dry area. If there is no dry area, fold the wet page in half, then move the fold to the top of the newspaper. Let dry.

Now you need to cut your tagboard and your construction paper backing at least 9” X 34” using your paper cutter. If you need to overlap to achieve the measurements, add ½” each time you need an addition until the measurements are correct. This will be much more difficult to cut by hand as you will need a ruler or yardstick and a pencil, then measure and draw lines, then cut. Make no mistake about it, a paper cutter is the BOMB as it saves MEGA time and frustration. Keep in mind if you have to overlap, you must assemble the each backing first by gluing the overlapped pieces using your glue bottle, then let them dry.

After your backing has dried, layout some old newspaper spreading it to be longer than 34”. Get your glue bucket and your 2” brush. Lay the tagboard backing on the newspaper. Have your babe dip the brush into the glue, then apply it to the entirety of the tagboard. Now place the construction paper backing onto the tagboard and let dry. This step will reinforce your backing to make it stronger.

Get some clean newspaper and lay it out but keep it folded. Lay the sign on top of the newspaper, have your babe glue it, then place it near the bottom of the backing on the construction paper side. Next lay out the numbers back side up in rote on the newspaper and have your babe glue these using the 2” brush and glue bucket. Place the number 1 (one) near the top of the sign on the left hand side of the backing. Glue each number in rote on top of the last using the ball as a guide for spacing. The ball when sliding should be able to center beside each number clearing the other numbers. Remember when placing more numbers on the newspaper be sure to place them on a dry area. If there is no dry area, fold the wet page in half, then move the fold to the top of the newspaper. Let dry.

Using the razor blade, make an @ 1” slit on the right side of the numbers beside the 10 and another slit beside the one. Again, use your ball as a guide for spacing. The ball when sliding should be able to center beside each number clearing the other numbers.

Using your glue bottle, reinforce the slits by gluing around them, and let dry.

Whew!!! We are just about finished. Take your ½” elastic and thread it through the slits measuring it to fit with an overlap of @ 2”. Get your glue gun and glue sticks. If you need one, here is a good selection:

Low-Temp Glue Gun Low-Temp Glue Gun
Safe and easy to use; the low temperature feature prevents burning from hot glue. Comes with 3 glue sticks. Not recommended for use by children. Clear Refill Sticks come in a set of 12 measuring 5/16D x 4L.

Keeping your elastic threaded through the slits, glue the ends together on the tagboard side of the backing with the glue gun. Slide the glued ends to the top of the slit. Next turn the backing over and using the gun again, glue the ball onto the elastic at the top making sure you lift the elastic when adhering and let it cool before releasing it to prevent it from sticking on the construction paper.

NOW DIG IT!!! Countdown to the New Year by sliding the ball down beside the correct number during the last 10 seconds of the old year.
