New Years Firecrackers

Supplies:
Empty Toilet Paper Tube

Construction Paper

Paper Cutter

Glue

2″ Brush

3 oz. Bathroom Paper Cup

Scissors

Sharp Pointed Object – We use a Letter Opener

Pipe Cleaner

Tape Measure

Red and Other Colored Glitter

Old Newspaper

Sales Flyer From Newspaper Half Page Size

Directions:

Lay your old newspaper over your work area. Pour the glue into  a medium plastic bowl. Add some water and stir, I use a whisk to quicken the process. Your glue must not be too thick as you need to paint your glue onto your tube, if it is too thin, it will not adhere well. We keep the excess inside an old cookie dough bucket with a handle for easy transpo:

Next get your glue bucket, your 2″ brush and the Times Square New Years Eve Countdown Ball. Get some clean newspaper and lay it out but keep it folded. Lay the ball right side up on the newspaper and have your babe put glue on it using the 2” brush and glue bucket.

Move the ball to a piece of your half page sales flyer that has been laid out. Have your babe open the pour spout of the confetti glitter. Confetti glitter is an important media for this craft as it will make your ball look more like the Times Square ball.

Need some:

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=akingar-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00AUB57HK&asins=B00AUB57HK&linkId=HYKCPD3RX5DS7BMO&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

Glitter Confetti - 8 oz. Glitter Confetti – 8 oz.
Includes shining diamonds dots hexagons red hearts sequins and stars in a resealable bag. 8 ounces. Does not contain latex.

Have your babe hold the glitter jar and together, pour the glitter over the glue. Remember, your babe may want to shake, but do NOT let them or glitter will fly!!! Remind them, “Pour, not shake.” Set the glitter down, pick up the ball and pour the excess glitter on top of the flyer. Next have your babe hold the glitter bottle while you pour the glitter on the flyer back into the jar. Let dry.

Move the sign to a piece of sales flyer that has been laid out. Using your glue bottle, outline the sign. Then have your babe open the pour spout of the glitter. Have your babe hold the glitter jar and together, pour the glitter over the glue. Remember, your babe may want to shake, but do NOT let them or glitter will fly!!! Remind them, “Pour, not shake.” Set the glitter down, pick up the sign and pour the excess glitter on top of the flyer. Next have your babe hold the glitter bottle while you pour the glitter on the flyer back into the jar. Let dry.

Go back to your newspaper and lay out the letters backwards, With your glue bucket and 2” brush, have your babe glue letters then place them onto the sign spelling out “Happy New Year!” and let dry. When placing more letters on the newspaper, be sure to place them on a dry area. If there is no dry area, fold the wet page in half, then move the fold to the top of the newspaper. Let dry.

Now you need to cut your tagboard and your construction paper backing at least 9” X 34” using your paper cutter. If you need to overlap to achieve the measurements, add ½” each time you need an addition until the measurements are correct. This will be much more difficult to cut by hand as you will need a ruler or yardstick and a pencil, then measure and draw lines, then cut. Make no mistake about it, a paper cutter is the BOMB as it saves MEGA time and frustration. Keep in mind if you have to overlap, you must assemble the each backing first by gluing the overlapped pieces using your glue bottle, then let them dry.

After your backing has dried, layout some old newspaper spreading it to be longer than 34”. Get your glue bucket and your 2” brush. Lay the tagboard backing on the newspaper. Have your babe dip the brush into the glue, then apply it to the entirety of the tagboard. Now place the construction paper backing onto the tagboard and let dry. This step will reinforce your backing to make it stronger.

Get some clean newspaper and lay it out but keep it folded. Lay the sign on top of the newspaper, have your babe glue it, then place it near the bottom of the backing on the construction paper side. Next lay out the numbers back side up in rote on the newspaper and have your babe glue these using the 2” brush and glue bucket. Place the number 1 (one) near the top of the sign on the left hand side of the backing. Glue each number in rote on top of the last using the ball as a guide for spacing. The ball when sliding should be able to center beside each number clearing the other numbers. Remember when placing more numbers on the newspaper be sure to place them on a dry area. If there is no dry area, fold the wet page in half, then move the fold to the top of the newspaper. Let dry.

Using the razor blade, make an @ 1” slit on the right side of the numbers beside the 10 and another slit beside the one. Again, use your ball as a guide for spacing. The ball when sliding should be able to center beside each number clearing the other numbers.

Using your glue bottle, reinforce the slits by gluing around them, and let dry.

Low-Temp Glue Gun Low-Temp Glue Gun
Safe and easy to use; the low temperature feature prevents burning from hot glue. Comes with 3 glue sticks. Not recommended for use by children. Clear Refill Sticks come in a set of 12 measuring 5/16D x 4L.

Keeping your elastic threaded through the slits, glue the ends together on the tagboard side of the backing with the glue gun. Slide the glued ends to the top of the slit. Next turn the backing over and using the gun again, glue the ball onto the elastic at the top making sure you lift the elastic when adhering and let it cool before releasing it to prevent it from sticking on the construction paper.

NOW DIG IT!!! Countdown to the New Year by sliding the ball down beside the correct number during the last 10 seconds of the old year.

New Year’s Eve Shakers for Wee Ones

Supplies:
Your Child’s FAV Used Christmas Gift Wrap Length
Chalk Piece

Used Ribbon Lengths

Paper Plate

Glue Container

Glue Bottle

@ 2″ Paint Brush

Dry Beans
Directions:
Take the paper plate and trace it on the backside of your used Christmas Gift Wrap Length with a piece of chalk. The chalk will not tear the paper or show a line on the other side. Cut around the paper plate  an extra @ 1 1/2″ X 2″ from your chalk line. Next, cut slits around the used gift wrap:

Over the centuries civilizations have been celebrating the birth of the new year with many traditions and superstitions attached to the festivities.

A New Calendar

Prior to 46 B.C. Rome had instituted a calendar that was 10 months (304 days). This posed a problem when the calendar began to rapidly become inconsistent with the patterns of the sun causing major inaccuracies. Julius Caesar began to consult astronomers during that time to find a more consistent way to measure the days of the year.  These talks instituted the Julian calendar.  You can find out more about the Julian Calendar here:

Julian Calendar History

The Gregorian calendar which we use today, was developed as a way to correct the Julian calendar. You can find out how here:

Gregorian Calendar Beginnings

New Years Around The World
Australia:
Australians have parties and make a loud entrance on New Year’s eve with fireworks, bells, and even loud car horns. On New Year’s Day many go to the beach or to public events.

Brazil:
In Brazil some people wear white clothes that represent a desire for peace in the new year.

England:
Parties commence on New Year’s Eve waiting for the bells of Big Ben ring at the stroke of midnight.

Holland:
Time is spent with family rather than at parties exchanging best luck wishes while enjoying Dutch comedies and games.

Italy:
Italians make lentils for good fortune while spending time with their families. Pork is a traditional gift symbolizing the richness of life in the coming New Year. Fireworks are heard all over the country, in Naples they have a huge fireworks display. Sparkling wine is served at parties along with dancing and games. They also have an unusual tradition throwing old items out of their windows to get ready for the New Year.
Japan:
“Bonekai” parties are held to forget the previous year and all the troubles that occurred. New Year’s day is a day of joy, the Japanese celebrate with rice wine and ozoni soup. Shrines are also visited on the New Year.

Mexico:
A display glass with a candle is used for people to put change into, then filled with water for good luck. Mexicans like Spaniards, eat 12 grapes for good luck during the year. They also walk around the outside of their houses with a suitcase while hoping for travels during the year. A day of cleaning begins on New Year’s day to signify renewal. Fireworks displays are thought to scare away spirits allowing for safe passage into the New Year.

Russia:
Ushers in the New Year with fireworks, Russian vodka, and champagne. People may be singing carols or telling fortunes. A zakuska table is laid out for parties that feature appetizers rather than a huge meal.

Southern U.S.
In the South some people eat black eyed peas and turnip greens. The peas signify coins and the turnip greens signify money. Eating them is said to bring you prosperity.

Just after midnight the Spaniards eat twelve grapes believing it will bring 12 good months in the new year.

Venezuela

Fav New Year’s Eve Toasts Around the World
It is said that during the 17th century England, it was customary to float a piece of spiced toasted bread in a bowl or carafe of wine to improve its flavor.  When glasses were raised in the traditional custom of drinking to wish good health, it was considered rude to not finish every drop of wine including the toast.
These popular International New Year’s Toasts convey some variation of “Bottom’s up”, “Here’s to your good health” or “Happy days”. If you know of more International toasts, we would be STOKED if you wrote them in our comments section. Also if you noticed I have spelled any of the following incorrectly, please mention it as my eyes are NOT what they used to be!

Auld Lang Syne

This song was published in 1796 by Robert Burns and was created in Scotland. The tradition of singing this song on New Year’s Eve began when Guy Lombardo sang it at The Roosevelt Hotel in Canada. It continued to build popularity, so now it is commonplace to hear it sung when ushering in the New Year.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and the days of auld lang syne?
And here’s a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie’s a hand o’thine.
We’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

A Very Merry Vintage 2014 Christmas FREEBIES!

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:11

For unto you is born this day,…. Day is here put for a natural day, consisting both of night and day; for it was night when Christ was born, and the angels brought the tidings of it to the shepherds. The particular day, and it may be, month and year, in which Christ was born, cannot be certainly known; but this we may be sure of, it was in the fulness of time, and at the exact, season fixed upon between God and Christ in the council and covenant of peace; and that he was born, not unto, or for the good of angels; for the good angels stand in no need of his incarnation, sufferings, and death, having never fell; and as for the evil angels, a Saviour was never designed and provided for them; nor did Christ take on him their nature, nor suffer in their stead: wherefore the angel does not say, “unto us”, but “unto you”, unto you men; for he means not merely, and only the shepherds, or the Jews only, but the Gentiles also; all the children, all the spiritual seed of Abraham, all elect men; for their sakes, and on their account, and for their good, he assumed human nature; see Isaiah 9:6.

in the city of David; that is, Bethlehem, as in Luke 2:4 where the Messiah was to be born, as being, according to the flesh, of the seed of David, his son and offspring; as he is, according to his divine nature, his Lord and root. The characters of this new born child follow, and which prove the tidings of his birth to be good, and matter of joy:

a Saviour; whom God had provided and appointed from all eternity; and had been long promised and much expected as such in time, even from the beginning of the world; and is a great one, being God as well as man, and so able to work out a great salvation for great sinners, which he has done; and he is as willing to save as he is able, and is a complete Saviour, and an only, and an everlasting one: hence his name is called Jesus, because he saves from sin, from Satan, from the law, from the world, from death, and hell, and wrath to come, and from every enemy,

Which is Christ the Lord; the Messiah spoken of by the prophets; the anointed of the Lord, with the Holy Ghost without measure, to be a prophet, priest, and king in his church; and who is the true Jehovah, the Lord our righteousness, the Lord of all creatures, the Lord of angels, good and bad, the Lord of all men, as Creator, the Prince of the kings of the earth, the Lord of lords, and King of kings; and who is particularly the Lord of saints by his Father’s gift, his own purchase, the espousal of them to himself, and by the power of his grace upon them: and the birth of such a person must needs be joyful, and is to be accounted good news, and glad tidings.

Vintage Christmas Carols & Hymns Activities & FREEBIE!
L@@ks like the Christmas Holidays are officially upon us now. Why just think, only 2 more Thursdays, then the 3rd Thursday is CHRISTMAS!!! Well, time ALWAYS proves my analysis, “Once the school year begins, you may just as well KISS the rest of the year GOOD-BYE!!!” The older I get, the more it becomes apparent the days scurry by at an ALARMING rate!
On a LIGHTER note, my hubby, Pyute & I are going to VEGAS on Monday to see the RAT PACK IS BACK!!!  I am so STOKED as I majorly DIG the scene! We saw them last year and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!! While it will basically be the same script, I do NOT care as this show will no longer be performing as of December 31. SAD but overall, I am HEP to the hap as after time, a body becomes weary of repetitive routine…which is why at my age, I have found myself seeking to get  “out of my box” and LOVING it!!
When I was younger in the days gone past, teaching & raising my babes was all I tripped on. If I wanted to go somewhere, such as the beach, camping, Drive In, Amusement Parks and the like,  why I just took them ALL with me. We accomplished many a exciting and successful caravan in those days! But now, I am LOVIN’ just me & my hubby…SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!
That said, I have been intensely re-formatting my next 2 post for this here blog, my house is in shambles (it is getting on my nerves, as TRUST me. my family will NOT hesitate telling you so upon prompt), yet  my mind & body is running on FULL speed! For the life of me, I just am unable to fathom how ALL of my fellow Ed bloggers out in web land appear to smoothly hang with it all. I also am in wonder how I was able to pull off accomplishing so much in a day during my younger years. Hmmm, as the sands storm by, so do the days of our life! So MUCH to do, so LITTLE time…sigh…
I am publishing this post before I leave for Vegas, and have the 2nd post ready to publish when I get back on the 13th. I plan on being MOST elusive this week, so come back & visit next Saturday as my next post will be on Toy Soldiers.
But this here post contains my FAV Christmas Carol craft from the days of yesteryear & I have included my FREEBIE pattern for you to make with your babes! I cannot begin to tell you how many children & parents enjoyed the outcome of this inviting Christmas Carol decoration throughout the years. Hung on a door, it is sooooooooooo BODACIOUSLY BOSS!!!

Christmas Carols & Hymns were written to honor the coming of our King and prompt our spirit into the worship & praise of our TRUE & LIVING LORD, and that my dear friend, contrary to popular belief, is nothing to shake a stick at! As the Share Faith site so plainly writes:
The birth of Jesus was celebrated by music: “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:13-14).

Check out more info this site has to offer concerning the origins of Christmas Carols & Hymns:
This next site offers Christmas Carol Customs and a link to the Service of Nine Lessons from the King’s College in Cambridge, U.K, where you can download their previous service sheets:

About also has a brief post on Christmas Carol Origin along with other Christmas Carol links:

While Christian Science is a cult, this post from the Christian Science Monitor specifically covers the origin of some of our popular carols:
The History site has the origin in video form along with MORE Christmas trivia in video:

So, are you ready to hear some really melodious carols? Here is Pentatonix singing Christmas Hymns in story sequence:
