One of our most rare 45 RPM story record’s is “The Story of Fire”.

This story is most def a product of its time. It centers around a little “cave” boy named Agoo.

The claims of the Listen & Learn Record Co. in 1964 are MOST reflective of the thoughts of the day. Note how the sleeve states “Tells the HISTORY…”:

Their statement is indeed laughable at best! The TRUTH of the matter is fire was created by God. Man’s first interaction with fire was at the altar after the fall, indeed man’s necessity for fire is due to the fall. The alter was indeed, a foreshadow of the Cross of Christ, the promise of reconciliation between man and his Creator.

Therefore, I introduce the story of Agoo as a fairy tale for young ones and as a unproven theory for older children. Much discussion ensues in regards to what God said in His Word vs what man says in his theories. It is IMPERATIVE that children learn about various theory’s in order to discern their falsehood(s) when encountered. With the Biblical Scriptures as a guide as the Holy Spirit leads, these types of theory’s are EASILY proven false.

Bottom line to ALL theory debates: What does God say? One can find Scriptures addressing the falsehood(s) of various theory’s from Genesis to The Revelation. As Charles Spurgeon once said, “Do not dispute or discuss without your eye on the Cross.”, Isaiah 1:18 comes to mind.

The story begins with Agoo going off to hunt food. The narrator states that man knew fire but knew nothing about how to use fire to their benefit. Agoo saw a horse and threw a rock at it.

The rock missed so the horse ran off. Agoo’s rock hit another rock on the ground and it sparked. Since it had not rained in months, the spark started a fire. Then a saber-tooth tiger saw Agoo & started towards him.

Agoo panicked and picked up a burning stick. He then used the stick to attack the tiger. Agoo ran towards the tiger and the tiger seeing the fire ran away. He took the burning stick back to his tribe and told them his story. Everyone was amazed that fire could be used to man’s benefit. Agoo was a hero!

The flip side tells a few different brief fire legends from around the world along with the invention of matches; who invented them, when they were invented, when they became safe to use and when they were mass marketed.

Now here is the rub on this issue, when I was a child, man said, “millions of years cave man”, today it is “billions of years amoeba slime”. My father always told us kids it was all nothing but a bunch of “hooey”.

So how did a lie become truth? A lie becomes truth when cleverly disguised with a bit of truth over a period of time. This is called propaganda. Propaganda is the result of lies wrapped in truth used to promote certain agendas.

If you would like to spark conversation in your classroom, The Story of Fire record may be used as a supplement of various subjects. While I am currently unable to find the record on Amazon, eBay has one:

In the 50’s & 60’s, the Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon man, etc teachings were not only in the classroom and but also on television as well. Think The Flintstones.

The difference in the days of my childhood was, overall, we kids did NOT believe in “cave men” as we had a sound Biblical foundation. From what I recall, just about every child in the neighborhood got on the “Bible Bus” to Sunday School, why, even the “bad” kids.

After 40+ years I can still remember our Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Dale addressing the subject.

As a child, I thought Mrs. Dale a very beautiful and classy woman, I admired her very much. One Sunday she said, “Many of you children have informed me you are learning about “cave men” in school, so we are going back to the very beginning…

in the beginning, GOD…”

She had scrapped her previous lesson plans and promptly addressed the issue imparting to each one of us the truth in regards to God’s creation of man, man’s fall from grace along with introducing the foreshadow of the Cross of Christ, the altar.

She held everyone of us kids in rapt attention as she imparted the stories to us.

On any given Sunday, she might have a stack of X-L newsprint clipped to her easel with chalk sticks the colors of the rainbow resting on the rail. As she performed her artistry creating each scene one by one, methodically turning the pages over the top of her easel she continued to impart God’s love for His children.

On another Sunday she may have used the flannelboard proficiently changing people, scenes and backgrounds throughout the story.

She also was fond of implementing film strips with records, or playing the piano teaching us to sing songs of worship along with other types of games and activities.

When a comedic cave man television series titled “It’s About Time” aired in the 60’s, ALL the kids who had television were so excited.

I remember everyone at school anxiously awaited its first airing. The next day on the playground we all talked about the show vs what Mrs. Dale had taught us. We recited a little rhyme, which looking back was a bit harsh. It went like this:

“It’s about time, its about space, it’s about time to slap your face!”

Quite BRUTAL but I do not remember anyone really slapping hard.

We kids thought if anyone really believed in cave men, they should be slapped for being so stupid. There was NO way we were apes! In that day, it WAS GOOD to be a kid!

The the sitcom’s hysterical story line follows two astronauts who broke the time barrier and went back in time.

Upon embarking their craft, they explored the region and ran into a clan of cave men.

The comical hilarity that resulted from their various interactions highlighted the ridiculousness of the ‘cave man” theories. Enjoy the tomfoolery in this episode of “Me Caveman, You Woman” with MUCH guffawing:

For a craft, we made an altar. Our back acre was a good place to find some rocks. While we were looking for rocks, we talked about the types and sizes of rocks we would need for to make our model. When each child got enough rocks to make an altar, we brought our buckets inside. Using this color of Playdoh®:

from our 36 color Playdoh® Pack, (readily available during the Holiday Season. I ALWAYS stock up for the year as it is VERY economical during this time, besides the larger packs have a greater array of colors to choose from when integrating Playdoh® with a particular project such as this):

we built our altars alternating stones and Playdoh®, then topped them with broken sticks, laying them across the top of the altar as one does when building a fire. Next we took some pre-cut tissue scraps and stuck them onto the sticks to form a fire shape. And I must say, these altars are BURNIN’!

My babes DIG the book and record set scene. Some feature a narrator along with various orchestrations, songs and sounds, while others are just narrated. Book and record sets bring a multi sensory supplemental adventure to the story. The following sets are our FAVS and we read them several times throughout our Fire Safety studies.

The first Fire Safety book and record set we read while listening to is “Five Little Fireman”. It was a Little Golden Book that was put into a record set. The bright and colorful detailed illustrations take you along with 5 firemen of yesteryear on their job putting out a little house fire:

The firemen received a call about a house fire. Down the pole they slide and jump into their firetruck:

The fire won’t wait, so off they go:

They clang as they whiz through the streets:

They get to the little burning house and each little fireman promptly performs his duties:

The five little firemen put out the fire:

Then off they go back to the fire station, mission accomplished:

And the five little firemen jump into bed, a job well done:

Five Little Firemen Book and Record Set

We are very keen on Peter Pan Records as they are bursting at the seams with sounds, songs and brilliant illustrations. Frankie the Brave Fireman is a Peter Pan Book & Record set we review every year as well.

Frankie was a brave fireman:

but no one in his town took him seriously:

Even his fellow firefighter’s sing about his mishaps accompanied by an orchestra:

But Frankie kept a positive outlook and worked hard:

One day as Frankie sat on his bunk polishing his badge, the fire bell rang…all the firemen slid down the pole:

Frankie scurried as fast as he could but he was too late….Frankie had been left behind:

The firemen were already at the fire singing their fireman song as they worked:

As Frankie came upon the scene, the firemen were gone and all was serene…but was it?

Sure enough someone had left their puppy and the fire was still burning upstairs…the building was about to collapse. As quick as a wink, Frankie grabbed a nearby ladder and climbed up:

Frankie grabbed that pup and out the door he ran…the people cheered:

The townsfolk talked about Frankie’s bravery for a long time afterward and Frankie and the pup became best friends:

Our last book and record set is Huckleberry Hound at the Firehouse:

One day when Huck went looking for a job, he happened upon the firehouse. When the firemen saw he was not a Dalmatian, they promptly threw him out:

After Huck pouted for a bit. he went home and came up with an idea:

When Huck went with the firemen, all he did was create havoc:

But Huck was not daunted, no siree! Quick as a wink Huck jumped down the chimney and ran out the door and jumped into the firetruck:

Huck backed up the truck and slammed on the brakes. All the water poured out onto the fire:

And when the water washed Huck clean, the firemen discovered he was not a real firedog and waved good-by:

We made Dalmatian headbands to go with our Huck the Fireman story.

I had my babes cut two ear shapes out of white heavy-weight tagboard while I used my trusty paper cutter to cut a 24″ X 1.5″ strip for each child.

Then I had my babes put spots on the ears and their headbands using a black bingo marker.

Next they glued the ears onto their headbands in the proper places and let them dry. When dry, I wrapped the headband around their head for a snug fit, then removed it & stapled the ends where they lay.

My babes had so much interactive adventures playing Huck as I read the story.

Next we made Dalmatian Pudding Cups. First I had my babes stamp black “spots” on pre-cut white foam ear shapes using the eraser on the end of an unsharpened #2 pencil and a black ink pad.

While they were doing that, I drew a muzzle & whiskers on a clear plastic cup with a black permanent marker. When they were finished, I glued the spotted ears and two wiggle eyes on their cups with my glue gun.

Then we made the pudding and stirred in some chocolate chips. I poured the pudding into the cups and of course my babes wanted whipped cream on the top. I would say our Dalmatian Pudding Cups turned out real cool and tasty too!

Our first vintage reel is a Disney Cartoon dated 1935 starring Mickey Mouse Mickey’s featuring Donald Duck, Goofy and a guest star appearance, Clarabelle the Cow. Presented in its original TRUE vintage form it is filled with mishaps and calamity intermingling with MEGA havoc!!! As expected in cartoons of yesteryear, tho’ havoc ensues, all is STILL havoc! Another Disney classic character is Donald Duck. In this vintage 1940 reel, Donald Duck plays a fire chief. Featuring the antic’s of Donald’s 3 devious nephew’s along with Donald BLOWING his stack resulting in the most hilarious mishaps along the way:

Hook and Ladder Hookum, a 1933 Cartoon put out by Van Beuren Studios starred their original characters, the short-tall human duo Tom & Jerry, who in later years the studio changed their names to Dick & Larry. The theme is basically the same as Disney’s old tyme cartoons, tho’ havoc ensues, all is STILL havoc!

One of our FAV characters is Gabby from the 1939 Gulliver’s Travels animated movie, which by the by won 7 awards and sported 9 spin off cartoons. In this reel, one of the spin off characters Gabby, resolves to help anyone in need and in this instance, it is his local fire department. Watch Gabby’s antics take control as a fireman in “Fire Cheese” from Max Fleisher in 1941:

Some of my FAV cartoons as a child were from Famous Studios, “Screen Song” or “Start the Day with a Song” in which you follow the bouncing ball and sing along…in the “The Big Flame Up” you will follow the flaming fireball to sing “A Hot Time in the Old Town”:

Popeye the Sailor is another FAV from days gone by. In this Max Fleischer cartoon Olive Oyl once again finds herself in need of a man to rescue her. A series of competitions ensue between Popeye and his co-star “Bluto” later named “Brutus” which ensures a good thrashing for Olive and ultimately brings Popeye to her final rescue. This last reel for the younger set, Smokey Bear in “The Fire Fighters Convention” is from Rankin & Bass. Airing in1969-1970 as a Saturday morning cartoon series the “Fire Fighters Convention” was one of the episodes, which thankfully is available on youtube:

Your Fire Department was a public ed film released by the Los Angeles Fire Dept. in 1949. It presents detailed segments of firefighters at work, various types of fires along with fire prevention and safety. It also displays the many different types of fire fighting vehicles of the era:

Fireman Tom Briggs starts as Firefighter First Class at Station 1in this 1954 “The Fireman”. This reel displays care of equipment and various fireman duties and drills, EXCELLENT for the younger set:

The Story of a Fireman put out by Los Angeles Fire Dept. depicts a narrated fireman’s life at the LAFD in 1954 for older elementary and Junior High children:

We close all the doors in our tiny hallway downstairs to make it as dark as possible. Then using the end door as a screen, my babes huddle around to experience learning via different medias:

Targeted for upper elementary and junior high children, The Flintstones in “Fire Escape” & “Fire Alarm” film strips with accompanying audio cassettes put out by Hanna-Barbara, distributed by B & L films come complete with a teacher’s guide. These are a part of an entire series of various Hanna-Barbara characters starring in various films for education:

And believe it or not, you can still purchase these on eBay:

If you have never used film strips as an interactive ed media in your classroom, TRUST me on this as mine DIG the scene and you will find yours will as well. They find something exciting in that vintage metal projector, shutting off the lights and closing the blinds, not to mention they are STOKED to run it themselves. They learn how to thread the projector as well, even showed me a few tricks. You will be absolutely astounded to note even the younger set gets hep to the action QUICKLY!

You can make any flat solid color surface a screen. I use an easel:

You can even get replaceable lights and while it advertises 15 or 25 hr, well I can tell you that we have used our projector with every subject for decades and as yet had to change the bulb:

I will add that I DO have back up bulbs on hand carefully stored but I must proclaim these vintage projectors are practically BOMB PROOF!! MOST unlike today’s throw away society.

Film strips are also mind-blowing as you can trip the scenes one by one as classroom discussion evolves:

To promote discussion of a particular frame scene, you just switch the projector to fan only so the light does NOT melt film:

then either lift the needle with the lever in the back on the record player:

or push the stop on the cassette player:

This spontaneous method of learning via projection keeps your babes in rapt attention throughout the strip thereby instilling greater recollection.

Some projectors come with a case while others do not. To store a projector that does not have a case, you can use toaster, coffee maker or mixer sized appliance covers. The size you get will be determined on the dimensions of your projector. I used a blender size for mine. I had made it for my mother but when she came to live with us, I snagged it for my projector and just folded it over at the bottom to fit:

20 Interactive Ten Apples Up on Top Merriment’s & FREEBIES!

We have been having so much fun with our Apples Unit this September!

One of our FAV segment’s is our Ten Apples Up on Top book! Ever since my babes were in diapers, Ten Apples on Top has been a FAV part of our Apple Unit studies.

When my babes got a bit older, after reading the story I had them stand in front of our yellow door and told them to point to the top of their head. Then I took their pictures, one after another.

I loaded the pictures up on my computer,

put them into a document,

and sized them to fit an 8 oz. yellow plastic party drink cup.
I glued each their pictures onto separate cups, one for each child:

They painted egg carton holders red:

and when they were dry, I used my trusty letter opener to poke a hole in the top of each egg cup and each yellow cup:

Using wooden shish-a-bob skewers, I pushed a skewer inside the top of the yellow cups. Then my babes TRIPPED around with Ten Apples Up on Top each of their heads:

We counted, added and did a bit of “take away” subtracting.

Apple Adjectives

For language arts incorporation, make 11 apples using some of my freebie mini pack printables or make your own. Then write the following apple adjectives, one on each apple:

crisp. crunchy, smooth, round, green, shiny, fresh, sour, red and sweet.

Pick a child to point to an apple adjective and read it. Next sing the word to the tune of BINGO.

I have an apple in my hand and it looks very crisp.

C-R-I-S-P,

My apple it tastes crispy.

I have an apple in my hand and it looks very crunchy.

Crunch-crunch-crunch-crunchy,

My apple it tastes crunchy.

I have an apple in my hand and it feels very smooth.

Apple is it’s Name

To go along with the song make single apple cards using one of my mini packs above or your own apple cut-outs. Make five cards with a whole apple on the front. Write ‘a’ on one apple, ‘p’ on another, ‘p’ on the 3rd apple, ‘l’ on the 4th, and e on the 5th. On the back of the ‘a’ card put an apple with one bite cut out of it. On the back of the first ‘p’ card put an apple with two bites cut out of it. Continue with three, four, and five bites. As you sing the song have your babes turn over the apple cards to reveal the bites.

Apple Game List

Apple Counting

Glue a felt tree shape to each of five cardboard squares. Write a number from 1 to 5 under each tree. Cut fifteen apple shapes out of felt. To play the game, have the children take turns identifying the numbers below the trees and placing the corresponding numbers of apples on them.

Apple Shaped Math Mats

This game may be played with an entire class or just a few children. Make as many of these Apple mats as your class needs, one for each child. Cut out a large apple shaped piece out of red, green or yellow felt, a stem out of brown felt, a leaf out of green felt the later two size appropriate. Glue them onto each apple. Out of white felt cut out a star shaped section and glue in the middle of each apple. For seeds, you can either cut out 12 seeds for each apple from black felt, or you can use real seeds or black beads.

Children roll a die and place that number of seeds in each section. Then write the addition or multiplication problem that represents the number of seeds in that apple.

Counting Apple Seeds

Cut out 10 red and 10 yellow tagboard apples. On each of the yellow draw one to ten seeds in the center using a black marker. Number the red apples from one to ten identify the number on the red apples and place on the yellow apples. Laminate them. Have the children match the corresponding apple numbers.

Hungry Monster

Make a monster with a big mouth opening out of a box. Then tell a story about the apple monster who lives in a far away orchard. This monster is so hungry he has to be fed with apples or he will eat us up. Have your babes roll apples into the monster’s mouth. The one who feeds the monster the most apples wins!

Orchard Relays

Materials Needed:

Large Trees

Apples

Bowls

Tape

Timer

Directions:

Make a large tree, one for each child or team. Next give each child an apple made from red, green or yellow construction paper or tag board. Laminate them. Have them write their names and something they are thankful for onto their apples. Divide class into teams. The teams line up in single file, opposite their tree. Between the teams and their trees is a simple obstacle course with four or five obstacles. There could be a table to go under; chairs to weave in and out of; an old blanket to wriggle under or a skipping rope to jump over – the choice is yours! Place the cut out apples in a bowl, one for each child. Set a timer and on the GO, the children or teams will grab an apple from their bowl, run the obstacle course to their tree, tape the apple on, then race back to tag off to the next player on their team or gets another apple and repeats until all their apples are taped on their tree. First child or team to place all their apples onto their apple tree is the winning team!

Pass the Apple

Play “Pass the Apple” like hot potato. When the music stops, whoever is holding the apple, goes into the “apple pot” which is the center of the circle. When all the “apples” are in the pot, have your babes make applesauce. Stir (children turn), add sugar, add cinnamon, etc, to taste(children shake). When baking, your babes will giggle a lot when they start to bubble.

This is the way we recited the above jump rope rhyme when I was a child in the 50’s & 60’s:

A Magic Apple Story

The Little Red House with No Doors and No Windows and a Star Inside!

There was once upon a time a little boy who was tired of all his toys and tired of all his play.

“What shall I do?” he asked his mother. And his mother, who always knew beautiful things for little boys to do, said: “You shall go on a journey and find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside.”

This really made the little boy wonder. Usually his mother had good ideas, but he thought that this one was very strange. “Which way shall I go?” he asked his mother. “I don’t know where to find a little red house with no doors and no windows.”

“Go down the lane past the farmer’s house and over the hill,” said his mother, “and then hurry back as soon as you can and tell me all about your journey.”

So the little boy put on his cap and his jacket and started out. He had not gone very far down the lane when he came to a merry little girl dancing along in the sunshine. Her cheeks were like pink blossom petals and she was singing like a robin.

“Do you know where I shall find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?” asked the little boy.

The little girl laughed. “Ask my father, the farmer,” she said. “Perhaps he knows.”

So the little boy went on until he came to the great brown barn where the farmer kept barrels of fat potatoes and baskets of yellow squashes and golden pumpkins. The farmer himself stood in the doorway looking out over the green pastures and yellow grain fields.

“Do you know where I shall find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?” asked the little boy of the farmer.

The farmer laughed too. “I’ve lived a great many years and I never saw one,” he chuckled, “but ask Granny who lives at the foot of the hill…She knows how to make molasses, taffy and popcorn balls…and red mittens! Perhaps she can direct you.”

So the little boy went on farther still, until he came to the Granny sitting in her pretty garden of herbs and marigolds. She was as wrinkled as a walnut and as smiling as the sunshine. Please dear Granny, said the little boy, “Where shall I find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?”

The granny was knitting a red mitten and when she heard the little boy’s question, she laughed so cheerily that the wool ball rolled out of her lap and down to the little pebbly path.

“I should like to find that little house myself,” she chuckled. It would be warm when the frosty night comes and the starlight would be much prettier than a candle. But ask the wind who blows about so much and listens at all the chimneys. Perhaps the wind can direct you.”

So the little boy took off his cap politely to the Granny and went on up the hill rather sorrowfully. He wondered if his mother, who usually knew almost everything, had perhaps made a mistake.

The wind was coming down the hill as the little boy climbed up. As they met, the wind turned about and went along, singing beside the little boy. It whistled in his ear, and pushed him and dropped a pretty leaf into his hands.

“I wonder,” thought the little boy, after they had gone along together for awhile, “if the wind could help me find a little red house with no doors, and no windows and a star inside.”

The wind cannot speak in our words, but it went singing ahead of the little boy until it came to an orchard. There it climbed up in the apple tree and shook the branches. When the little boy caught up, there, at this feet, lay a great rosy apple.

The little boy picked up the apple. It was as much as his two hands could hold. It was as red as the sun had been able to paint it, and the thick brown stem stood up as straight as a chimney, and it had no doors and no windows. Was there a star inside?

The little boy called to the wind, “Thank you,” and the wind whistled back, “You’re welcome.”

Then the little boy gave the apple to his mother. His mother took a knife and cut the apple through the center. Oh, how wonderful! There inside the apple, lay a star holding brown seeds.

“It is too wonderful to eat without looking at the star, isn’t it?” the little boy said to his mother.

“Yes, indeed,” answered his mother.

Ladybug Love Activities and FREEBIES Part 3

We are so STOKED you fluttered on by for Part 3 of our Ladybug Love Activities & FREEBIES!

So land on this here post and hang with us for awhile, as we tripped on some far-out ladybug games and did an out-a-sight craft!!! You will want to trip our dyno Ladybug Mask Pattern FREEBIE scene with your babes as well!!

My babes were DIGGIN’ this Ladybug Posture Balance Game! First I made our ladybug balance ballons. Using a funnel, I put some rice inside a red balloon. Then I blew up the balloon and tied it. Next I drew a ladybug on each babes balloon. I turned on our record player and put on our Romper Room record and played the Posture Basket Song…

…while they walked around balancing their ladybug balloons on their heads. Instead of the word “basket” in the song, we substituted “ladybug”…WHAT FUN they had balancing their ladybugs:

We learned about ladybug claws. They are called palps. Ladybugs use them to put food into their mouths.

Ladybugs are very helpful to us because they eat aphids, scale and spider mites and mealy bugs that attack other plants. Some even eat plant mildew. Because of their usefulness ladybugs are often harvested and sold to farmers to control the harmful insects.

I gave each of my babes a clothes pin and a bowl, then placed some large pom poms on the table. My babes then simulated a ladybug catching (with the clothespin) aphids and putting them in their mouth (bowl). They did such a DYNO job of filling their bowls with much excitement along with a sense of accomplishment! DIG the scene:

Ladybugs also use their antennae’s attached below their eyes to feel, smell and taste. Along with their eyes, antennae’s help the ladybugs gather their environment info and hunt for their foods of interest.

With this in mind, we learned about ladybug eyes. Ladybugs have two compound eyes. Their compound eyes are made up of what looks like a collection of bumps. The sections are called ommatidia that point in different directions to pick up movement. Each ommatidium is able to pick up certain details such as brightness, color, etc. We made our own ladybug eyes using egg carton portions, foil & wiggle eyes.

First, I cut an egg carton flat into a circle. Then I had my babes paint their egg carton circle piece and let it dry. Next I had my babes make foil balls to fit inside each compartment. Then they glue gunned their large wiggle eyes and foil into the correct spot:

Next I crumpled up foil and wrapped it around each eye circle to complete:

Vintage Egg Carton Games

Last we covered the ladybug’s lifecycle. Since ladybugs are indeed beetles, their correct name being ladybird beetles and I do not have an actual ladybug lifecycle flannelboard set, I used my beetle set. First I set up the ladybug beetle lifecycle in rote. We reviewed it several times, then I had my babes build the ladybug lifecycle in sequence themselves:

Then we made these cute little Ladybug Lifecycle Mini Books. For their covers, I had each babe put their finger on a red ink pad, then place their inked finger on the page. They did this as many as they wanted, and when the ink was dry, I drew on the antennae’s and legs:

For the inside pages I used the following ladybug lifecycle sequencing cards printout from Enchanted Learning. My babes colored & cut the page into 4 smaller pages, one page for each stage. Then I stapled them together in sequence:

Next we did some ladybug counting games. Using our flannelboard ladybugs, we did the following fingerplays:

FIVE LITTLE LADYBUGS

Five little lady bugs sitting in a tree.

The first one said, “I ‘m glad I’m me.”

The second one said, “I feel great too,”

The third one said, “How about you?”

The fourth one said, “It’s time to fly away,”

The fifth one said, “We’ll talk another day.

Another Version:

Five little ladybugs climbing on some plants,
Eating the aphids, but not the ants.
The first one said, “Save some aphids for me.”
The second one said, “They’re as tasty as can be.”
The third one said, “Oh they’re almost gone.”
The fourth one said, “Then we’d better move on.”
The fifth one said, “Come on, let’s fly!”
So they opened up their wings and they flew through the sky.

Ladybug in the Air

I saw a little lady bug go flying in the air,

But when I tried to catch her, two bugs were there.

Two little lady bugs flew up to a tree,

I tiptoed very quietly, but then there were three.

Three little lady bugs, looking for one more,

I saw one sitting on the ground, and that makes four.

Four little lady bugs, another to arrive,

I saw one landing on a flower, and that made five!

Five little lady bugs all red with black spots too,

I clapped my hands and away they all flew!

Six Hungry Ladybugs

Six hungry ladybugs climbing up a tree,
Six hungry ladybugs, can’t you see?

The first one ate just one leaf, soft and green.
The second one ate two leaves, shiny and clean.

The third one ate three leaves, enough to fill her tummy.
The fourth one ate four leaves, every one was yummy.

The fifth one ate five leaves, it took him all day long.
The sixth one ate six leaves, and then the leaves were gone!

Three Little Ladybugs

One little ladybug (hold up one finger)
With spots on its wings,
Landed right beside me (tap sides)
As I played on the swings. (sway forward and backward)
Two little Lady Bugs (hold up two fingers)
Flew around a flower, (move two fingers in a circle)
Then crawled beneath a leaf (children cup one hand over two fingers)
To nap for half an hour. (children lay their heads on their hands)

Ladybug Love

Our first ladybug game we played was roll n’ count. My babes rolled the dice, then put the rolled number of ladybugs near their initial on the pocket chart. As you can see, they just kept rolling & counting:

Next we did some ladybug interactive dot counting games with our flannelboard. First I made a large ladybug tagboard master pattern, then using a pencil, traced each piece according to its count (10 dots, 6 legs, 1 head & 1 body) onto a pre-cut milk filter sheet. Next, I traced each piece with a black Sharpie marker, then colored the appropriate color (black or red) in its proper space. Finally, I glued the head and legs onto the body and let it dry. For added fun, I glue gunned red wiggle eyes on the head in their appropriate place. Then let the fun begin:

While working on our ladybug dots flannelboard, we did the following Ladybug Rhymes & Poems:

Ladybug Lost Her Dots

Little Ladybug on the ground
Doesn’t make a sound.
Looking for her ten black dots
She lost them on the ground.

One black dot
Two black dots
Three block dots
And four.

Five black dots
Six black dots
She’s looking for some more.

Seven black dots
Eight black dots
Nine black dots
And ten.

The ladybug who lost her dots has found them all again!
